ByBrad Bradford

Hi Friend,

I know that for many of you, congestion and road safety are some of your biggest concerns. It’s particularly challenging when city-led construction projects are the cause of much of your frustration. Although infrastructure upgrades are essential, I agree the city can be doing a lot better in communicating and executing on these projects.

This past week, I held a community meeting about the Basement Flooding Protection construction along St. Clair Avenue East and its impacts on the Topham community — especially along Merritt Road, where the site office and laydown area were set up.

The disruption has been real, and residents brought up genuine safety concerns about the current arrangements. Seeing residents come together to advocate for their neighbourhood shows the passion and commitment to make things better, and together we got a commitment from staff to relocate these uses.

I’m working closely with City staff to deliver on our commitments as quickly as possible. Your advocacy is driving that work forward — thank you for standing up for your community.

Spring has been full of energy and community spirit across the ward and city.

On May 28, we celebrated something close to the heart of our city: Toronto Newcomer Day. Welcoming new folks, embracing diversity, and honouring the stories that shape Toronto is a reminder of what makes this city one of the best places in the world to live and grow.

This past week, I had a great time with the girls at the Kingston Road Village Spring Festival — the street was buzzing with music, games, and local vendors. A perfect example of how small businesses truly are the heart of our community.

We also had the chance to reflect on the city’s history during Doors Open Toronto at the Danforth Garage — a cornerstone of Toronto’s transit system since 1913. It’s incredible to see how our public spaces continue to evolve while honouring the legacy of the past.

It was also great to catch some pickleball action at Kew Rink! The East Toronto Pickleball Association has been tenacious in its work to bring a dedicated facility to the east end, and I’ve been working alongside them to find a solution. It was great to see so many enthusiastic players of all ages out enjoying the weather – learn more about how to join at etpa.ca.

Finally, the long-anticipated return of SING! Toronto brought world-class a cappella to Kew Gardens. Huge thanks to Pat and the entire SING! team for filling our community with music and joy once again.

As always, let me know how my team and I can help you.

I’ll see you around the community.

Warmly,

 – Brad

City Hall Updates 🆕

Bubble Zones

On May 22nd, City Council passed a safe access by-law to protect residents attending faith-based schools, daycares, and places of worship. I have been leading the charge on a Bubble Zone by-law in Toronto for over nineteen months, and am proud to see this work finally come forward to protect our faith communities. Toronto now joins municipalities like Ottawa, Brampton and Vaughan in ensuring that residents can attend their religious institutions without facing hate or harassment.

I appreciate the residents who took the time to write to me and share their messages of support or concern. The City’s solicitor confirmed that this bylaw would not eliminate the right to protest or demonstrate in Toronto, and that courts have upheld laws where governments have set reasonable limits in order to balance charter rights – such as with bubble zones around abortion clinics. The amendments we passed removed the requirement for institutions to be victimized before being able to access protections, and provided a 50 metre perimeter which is more in line with other existing precedents.

I believe that job number one of local government is to keep our residents safe. And in the most diverse city in the world, everyone deserves to feel safe when attending their place of worship, daycare, or school.

SafeTO

At the May meeting of City Council, Staff were directed to explore the expanded deployment of the Toronto Community Crisis Service (TCCS) into the TTC system. Part of having a reliable, functioning public transit system is making sure that riders feel safe and comfortable when they step onto a TTC bus, streetcar, or subway. Since 2023, I have been calling for a better approach to improving safety on the TTC, including by expanding the Community Crisis Service on the TTC and integrating it with Streets to Homes and the Mobile Crisis Intervention Teams. I’m looking forward to the full report coming forward next quarter, and I’ll be looking for strong coordination across safety services in our transit system.

Neighbourhood News

Celebrating Mary L. Christie – A Pillar of Volunteerism in Beaches–East York 🆕

A heartfelt congratulations to Mary L. Christie on receiving the prestigious Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers — a well-deserved honour recognizing over 40 years of dedicated service to our community.

Mary’s incredible legacy of volunteerism includes decades with Senior Link (now The Neighbourhood Group), where she served as Board Chair and helped lead the organization through several key amalgamations. She also brought her leadership and passion to many other organizations, including; The Board of Centre 55, The Canadian National Exhibition Association, The Parks and Recreation Advisory Council, Home and School at Adam Beck, The Toronto Healthy City Committee, The Board of Michael Garron Hospital.

Mary also co-convened the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day campaign for several years, bringing community members together for a vital cause.

Reflecting on her journey, Mary shared:

“It has been wonderful — I’ve met so many terrific and dedicated people, both staff and volunteers. It has truly enriched my life!”

Mary has twice been honoured by the Queen, named a Beach Citizen of the Year, and now adds the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers to her long list of accolades. We thank her for her tireless commitment, and for inspiring all of us to give back.

Congratulations, Mary!

Coxwell Danforth Mosaic Repair 🆕

Back in 2016, a group of artists and community members created a mosaic mural at Danforth & Coxwell over the course of the summer. After nine years, she’s showing her age.

We want to give her a facelift. “We” in this case, are the people behind the project (lead organizer and lead artist). We LOVE this mural, and want to make her beautiful again. We’re happy to contribute our time and energy for free, but we’re looking for help to cover the costs of the materials needed. (Paint, tiles, cement, grout, wedi board). If you can, please pitch in a few dollars!

If, by any chance there is money left over after we’re done, we will give the extra to the East End Arts.

If you’re handy and want to help do some of the touch ups with us (we’re aiming for late June, TBC) please let us know and we’ll reach out about timing etc when we have details.

Coyote Sightings

Seeing coyotes in your neighbourhood?  It’s quite normal to see or encounter coyotes in parks and green spaces across Toronto as they have adapted to the urban landscape. Coyotes are typically timid and generally do not pose a danger to people, however they may pose a danger for small pets.  Here are a few ways to help keep you and your pets safe:

  • Always keep your dog close to you and on a leash, especially in areas where coyotes are known to live.
  • Never feed coyotes and do not leave food, including pet food, outside.
  • Properly dispose of garbage and waste at home and at parks.
  • When encountering a coyote, do not run; instead make a loud noise to scare the coyote away.
  • Do not approach coyotes, their dens or their young.
  • Do not touch coyotes, even if they appear tame, sick or injured.

The City of Toronto, in partnership with Coyote Watch Canada, has created an e-learning module that provides great information about coyote behavior and ways that we can safely co-exist with our wild neighbours. To learn more, visit toronto.ca/Coyotes.

Rental Renovation License Bylaw

Landlords, are you planning renovations that require a tenant to move out? A new bylaw means you’ll need a Rental Renovation License.

Effective July 31, 2025, the bylaw requires landlords to apply for a license from the City within seven days of issuing an N13 notice to end tenancy for renovations. To obtain this license, landlords must submit building permits, a qualified professional’s report confirming vacant possession is necessary, notify tenants appropriately and provide a Tenant Accommodation or Compensation Plan.

The bylaw aims to support tenant stability, promote fairness and provide landlords with a clear, consistent process for undertaking major renovations. It applies to most residential rental units, with limited exemptions such as student residences and non- profit co-operatives.

Learn more about tenant protections and landlord responsibilities under this new bylaw by visiting toronto.ca/RentalRenoLicence.

Reminder on Grass and Gardens

Want to BEE a good neighbour? Learn about the do’s and don’t for your lawn and how to grow pollinator-friendly gardens! Cut grass on your lawn when the growth exceeds 20 centimeters and avoid prohibited plants that can pose a threat to human health or natural areas.

Do continue to delight neighbours with your garden and keep sidewalks or driver and pedestrian views clear from plants. To create much needed habitat for pollinators, please consider replacing some of your turfgrass area with native flowering plants. More information and resources are available at toronto.ca/GrassAndGardens.

The City of Toronto is conducting its annual Employment Survey between May and August. Now in its 43rd year, the survey collects key data from businesses across the city to support economic and land use planning.

If you’re a business owner, a surveyor may visit your location to quickly update employment figures. The process takes only a few minutes, and alternate options (phone, email, or online) are available if needed.

The Survey information is crucial for:

  • monitoring the extent, nature, and location of employment activity and land use;
  • planning transportation, sewer, and water infrastructure and social services such as day cares; and
  • monitoring changing economic conditions in Toronto.

All information is confidential and used only in aggregate to help plan services like transit, infrastructure, and child care. Learn more here.
